We've talked some in class about how teachers in ICON are facilitators. What do they facilitate? How is what they're doing similar to writing center approaches to teaching writing?
Well, last week I apparently did a blog that we are skipping, so please don't think I am crazy!
This is a hard topic to address since I am not familiar with what the CI's are doing on a day-to-day basis in their classes. As all teachers do, they facilitate learning. I assume that they are teaching the concepts, then allowing the students to go home to practice these concepts through TOPIC. I am sure that they give specific examples to correlate with the assignment focus for the week. I have not yet visited the writing center, so I assume that it is set up much the same way, only on a one-on-one basis.

Sorry, Elizabeth. . .I'm pretty much checking blogs only when we have prompts.
As you'll see from my post this week, you and I agree on many points. This is especially interesting given your teaching experience and my lack thereof, and also given that you are a DI while I am a CI with DI quotas.
It's hard to bring TOPIC into the classroom. The students can't submit extra assignments there, so we can't exactly "practice" in the TOPIC environment. I've discovered that what they see in and hear in the classroom may make perfect sense; but when they try to muddle through it back at the dorm, they get confused. THEY aren't making the connection between what goes on in class and what happens in TOPIC.
And in a way, I truly understand the phenomenon--in reverse. Last week, after weeks of reading up on book history (paper types, printfaces, press methods, etc.), I came face to face with a 17th century text. The actual tactile experience seemed pretty darn different than the pictures and explanations in my textbooks!
Hopefully, our talking about these concerns in class and via blogs will help facilitate our facilitation!!
Cathy
Elizabeth, I think you answered this prompt so well. Having worked at the Writing Center, I can tell you that you are right on in your description of the techniques used to teach, and I agree that the teachers in ICON probably relate to UWC tutors in these methods. Basically, I think you are awesome. :)
